Since the early 1970s, SMB has always been more than just a law firm. From day one Bernie Simons, one of the firm’s founding Partners was doing pro bono death penalty and since 2005, we have been home to The Death Penalty Project, an NGO set up by our team with consultative status before the United Nations, providing free legal representation to those facing the death penalty. Today we work in more than 30 countries around the world and our work has saved the lives of thousands of prisoners and transformed the legal landscape in the countries in which we operate.
Here is The Death Penalty Project annual report for 2024. This year alone, the team has helped over 75 people in more than 21 countries.
We are incredibly proud of this work and of the firm’s history and values.
