Simons Muirhead Burton are delighted to announce our sponsorship of British tennis player Mattias Southcombe, as he competes in matches around the world, proudly wearing the SMB logo.
A highly promising sportsman with a family-led passion for tennis, Mattias has played tennis since the age of 5, spending his summers practicing at a tennis court built by his great grandfather in the middle of a forest. His father, John, was a world-ranked tennis professional, and his mother, Lotten has been a qualified tennis coach.
Mattias has achieved a number of impressive milestones on his junior journey, from being the third best ranked tennis player in the UK aged 18 years and under, and a top 200 player in the world for competitors aged 18 and under.
Mattias’ journey as a high performing and dynamic athlete resonates with our firm’s ethos. As we partner with him on this exciting venture, we are not only helping him nurture his potential but also demonstrating our commitment to sports. Together, we’re gearing up for a year of accomplishments, inspiration, and shared success.
Speaking on his career, and how SMB’s sponsorship has helped to date, Mattias said:
“I realised my dream of wanting to become a professional tennis player after watching my brother compete and train to a high level.
“I followed in his footsteps and started training properly from the age of 9, under the wing of my father, who is currently nipping in and out of being my main coach.
“This summer I have spent 11 weeks in China competing in back-to-back tournaments. Initially hard outdoor, a bit indoor hard, as the weather was too hot, and outdoor and indoor clay.
“The sponsorship has helped me so much to grit through and carry on competing.
“On the 30th of August I am going to Rwanda for two tournaments!”
Partner Simon Goldberg said:
“We are delighted to be sponsoring Matthias again this year. He is a dedicated and committed athlete, and we are sure that he will prosper on the Tour. As part of the sponsorship programme, he will give motivational talks to our younger cohort of lawyers to give them a flavour of what it takes to be a full-time professional sportsperson”.
At SMB, our commitment to fostering growing talent aligns with our flourishing sports law practice, complementing our leading presence in media and entertainment law.
